View Full Version : setting up new 12# fly rod

I recently brought a 12 weight Penn fly rod I was after a 10 weight but the 12 was at the right price. I have a few questions on setting it up.

1. What knot do most people prefer to use to tie the leader on with? On my lighter rods I use a simple nail knot (as I lost a nice approx 8lb trout in Tassie when the Dacron loop with heat shrink came off).
2. Dose anyone tie doubles in their leaders? (I have heard of a few people putting doubles in their leaders.)
3. What pound leader/tippet to use? (Mostly be chasing kings/salmon/tailor/etc and maybe if I am lucky a Jew or two).

I was thinking about giving the Dacron loop another go with a 30lb leader to a 15/10lb tippet.

Any help would be appreciated
Dave

G'day Rocky

My heaviest Flyrod is a 10/11 and I use braided loops on the flylines, but I slide the braided loop onto the line and then whip the join with heavy fly tying thread for about 1.5 cm and then rub pilobond glue into the whipping.

The other option I have seen used up north is to fold the flyline back about 2-3 cms and whip that so that you get a loop at the end of your fly line and use that for a loop to loop conection

Thanks pogo

You have just confirmed what I was thinking with your first comment.
