Wheeny Creek Camp Ground,
We had decided through the week that we where going to piss off camping for the weekend and we wanted to head somewhere close, so we decided to head to a little place we stumble across a few weekends ago, when we 4WD'ed down a fire trail from Mountain Lagoon to Kurrajong.
This picturesque little place is located in a little valley between Kurmond and Colo Heights, it has a beautiful little creek that runs along the camp ground that is crystal clear fresh water, the deepest part was about waste deep, which was excellent with the kids, there is about forty camp sites spread out through the place so your not on top of each other,
We camped in a little part called Lyrebird which was probably the furthest from the toilet but didn't bother us to much, There is a flush toilet, no shower no fresh water (other than the creek water which i used but didn't risk using with the kids)
The fire places are good and there are quite a few around so your not stuck trying to fit 15 people around the fire,
Score, where we camped 8/10 the other camp grounds 7/10 (they had no beach also they where close to the track)

Looks like a nice spot - and to think I went camping last weekend - in the back yard :dontknow: - just beacuse my 3 year old wanted to go camping. She loved it so will try her on the real thing with a long walk to the toilet :wave1:
no fresh water (other than the creek water which i used but didn't risk using with the kids)
Dont do it mate if theres a chance that the stream has gone through farming lands or past other humans - use puritabs at the least, or boil the water. I used to drink water camping hunting/fishing all the time until just once from a crystal claer mountain stream many years ago - ended up with two weeks on the sh!tter, many many kgs lost - and a case of Giardia (sp?)

I boil the water for a good 2/3 minutes before i use it, I wouldn't drink straight from a creek.
Yup, Been there done that, drank from a pristine crystal clear Snowy Mts Stream. The water tasted like wine, crisp cold and refreshing.
And full of Giardia. 24 hrs later was in the crapper not knowing which end of me needed the bowl first. Crook as Rookwood
I will never drink untreated stream water again

Jesus!!!!!!!
It's good to see our little reference library of camping spots is growing. It's great to know of some spots that are close by.
I remember being warned years ago never to drink stream water in the Blue Mountains from someone that had the same experience as Pogo. As a young bloke we used to treck into some of the more remote areas and still would always boil and/or treat drinking water.
How is the access road Chris? Is it 4WD only?

Chris,
Is it tents only or can you take a camper to where you camped?
Thanks for the info, enjoyed the pics!
Howard.

Looks like a lot of fun. My tribe won't have a bar of camping!:dontknow:
Speaking of water, back in Lebanon all the water we used for home consumption was coming straight from a spring in the side of a mountain! Best water I ever tasted.:Worship:

Iain, two wheel drive is fine, Its dirt road but the main track is graded often by the look of it, you can two wheel it all the way over to Colo Heights then virtually follow the Colo all the way down under the putty road and out to where the mouth of the Colo meets the Mighty Hawkesbury,
Howard, the family that was camping with us had there camper, there seemed to be limited spots for them, but there was a few around,
Darryl, I reckon a little trek up the valley looking for the odd deeper whole might actually hold a fish or two, next time i go I'll ditch the wife and kids and sneak of up there with a rod!
also forgot to mention, this place is, first come, first served, you can't book, I'm not sure if there is a fee, no one came to charge us, maybe the ranger was having a bludge?

Is this the place Chris?
http://www.wildwalks.com/camping-in-nsw-parks/near-sydney-campsites/wheeny-creek-camping-ground.html
It mentions on the website, if you click on 'park information', that there is a $0 to $3 charge for camping. I'm assuming that is per person?
I think I read somewhere it is free to camp there.

Thats not too far from my place.
It's also a very popular place with the lads of the area to improve their rally driving skills. My son included!
It's a great site but please look out for the traffic especially after its rained and the creek is up.
