View Full Version : HELP Plaiting a double
HI guys
I just learnt how to plait a double using some step by step instructions off the net.
I'm just wondering if it's safe to cut the tag off close to the plait. How secure is it?
Also, how long do you guys usually make your double for fishing 15kg line? I was thinking about 4m would be plenty, but I haven't done this before so any tips on this would be good too.
Thanks
Tim

I trim the tag fairly close mostly. I only leave about 5 mm maximum. They are generally OK, and if snugged down correctly, shouldn't pull through.
I have mine at least 2 rod lengths if I can help it. That way you will have a couple of turns on the reel, and still have enough to trace a fish, or lift it if need be. But I think the length is limited if you ever want to fish IGFA rules. But then if you knew about IGFA rules, you wouldn't be asking here.

Thanks for that Joe.
I don't think IGFA will care how long my leader is:D . Not into comp fishing at all.
Have you done much shark fishing Joe? Any tips for how long the wire should be on the leader? I've caught a few small sharks before, but never specifically targeted them so I'm not up on what rigs people use for them

Last time I caught a shark, I was sight fishing. The only wire I had aboard was about 45 cms, but it did the trick. Depending on what shark you are targeting, and what size is intended, then you may have to run a long enough wire trace to allow for it rubbing on his body. Shark skin can be very abrasive.:o

Tim, which www site did you find so helpful?

It was on fishnet. There's a pretty good list of knots & rigs in the library there.

It's all pretty commonsense stuff hey. I'll run about 7' just incase. Thanks Joe. If I hook any sharks bigger than that then I think I'd rather be busted off. Well, not really, but it would be the sensible option:D .

mate it depends on the method that you use to finish off the plait, there are many ways to do it.... but if you are using a decent method then yeh you can go fairly close. Melt the end of the tag with a lighter if you are slightly paranoid.

How do you finish it Bashir? I just use the loop method where tou reverse the tag to make a loop, continue plaiting, then pull the standing double through the loop and pull it closed.

I do the same Joe, although there are easier ways to do it but I don't think they are better.

That's exactly what I ended up doing. Didn't end up doing the shark thing yesterday, but atleast I've learnt something new.

It's not the length of the double that matters in terms of abrasion resistance, it's the length of the leader. hooked a bluefin once with only 3ft leader and i could feel the tail beats on the double bfore it popped me off above the leader.
i just use the double for increased knot strength and fish as short as 2 ft double.
