Tried that angle before- lets just say going to the socials are the bestway to meet everyone, or put up your own "social event" like an shared outing or maybe contact Bluecod (George) as he does some of the PR work for the site
Sorry to dob ya in George, lol :wave1:

BUT- I'll let one of the Mods/Admins answer that question in full for you just in case I got in wrong :dontknow:

Agree 100% that it's great to meet other SA's face to face and that we need to do more in that department.

We have done comps in the past albeit with a very social slant. Unfortunately experience has proved that as soon as the word 'comp' gets mentioned it brings every wannabe dickhead out of the woodwork who inevitably spoil it for everyone.

The last social day was a great success (Mrs Roosterman is still etched in my brain :Worship::Worship::Worship:) and there will be more of them. Stay tuned.

Thanks Iain for clarifying that, Joe said something similar to me when I asked him about a comp and I understand the stigma around organizing a "comp"- and having been to the last 3 social events I concur they are def the best way to met everyone- have a few laughs, drink a few beers and enjoy some fine food.
Bring on the next social I say :Worship:

As Iain says, there are a few issues with competitions, besides the trolls that want to spoil it, there's also rules to formulate ..... and being in the nanny state there's enough of those already :bootyshake:.

There are other legal issues that would require addressing, judges, weighmasters and on-course stewards etc :bs::bs::bs: and at the end of the day the organisers would need :drugs:

Fcuk that ! ... socials are the order of the day .... and whilst I am loathe to admit it, its probably time we had one closer to the Shire .... not in it, just closer :BangHead: .... but is there a decent area in the Georges where you can have a BBQ and pull 20 boats up and have a sandy base :dontknow:

As has been said, comps mean prizes and there have been instances where people get too serious about who won or not. Has turned some great events very ugly, with blokes being banned in some extreme cases.

A few cheap gifts here and there doesn't hurt, like a free rod or little bits and pieces, but serious comps with serious prizes leave themselves wide open to a shit fight.

Social events are far more relaxed and fun.

Catching fish is not in the SA spirit Dave .. at least not preceding a social BBQ, as history always shows rofl rofl rofl besides the salmon are a long way yet

What we haven't had yet is a winter John Dory Social!

not bloody likely too either - they're worse than the mythical hairtail rofl

The only shark I'm keen on are mako's. Otherwise I'm not interested, really. Same with blackies, CBF (unless some one else collects the weed, then it's a maybe :D).

Wait until September/October for salmon. The weather will also be nicer than this cold rainy shit we have now.

- Shark social
- John Dory social
- Pub night

What about a Squid social - best ink 'money shot' gets a prize!!!

Feel free to put in your ideas.

If i remember right there was a thread that was locked about a shark social, as it didn’t want to get out of hand about people just going out and targeting sharks for the sake of it?

BBQ sounds like fun, or a night at a local pub that is easy for most people to get too.

Next either a night out squidding or chasing the hairtail (or hair of the dog if you prefer) :)

How about a crabbing social once the weather warms up again? We could do it down at Bate Bay, do a FDOS whilst we wait for the crabs and then go to Bundena for a beach cookup at the end of it all.

I like the idea of a squid freindly - on the port hacking we could camp out at bonny doon (bundeena) with boats beached at the ready. - either that or the basin sounds like the ticket, what better way to share stories than an overnighter!

A lyall campout wouldnt be bad either, you can camp on the banks and have boats beached ready for a fish anytime of day. Its only a 2/2.5hr drive for most. Good landbased fishing too

Ive just been handed a dvd from early May when the seabees fishing club held there annual social weekend, we sponsored it, i have to say the setup seems able to handle large groups with ease

Just my few ideas

Squid social day sounds good, with prizes for the best money shot. rofl

Snapper are a good winter option, although some members will be restricted by their boat capabilities and nobody will fish their usual marks due to secrecy.

What about the padawan/master style day that was mentioned previously where members can nominate themselves an authority on some form of fishing and team up with others who want to learnt that technique/species. With 2 session in a day it'd be a good way to make some new friends.

Just looking at all the sugestions, all sound good but as I've never fished for hairtail it would be a good social outing and I could also provide a couple of spots on my boat. A Jewie night would be great also, but just to be able to meet up and have a few drinks a good idea to Ian. Pod.
