Hi All,

As you may have seen from Bashir's post I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to fish wide of Sydney for game fish for the first time:)

We headed out at a very gentlemanly hour and after feulling up began the journey to the bait grounds. The chop was'nt too bad and certainly posed no problems for Bashir's Haines. We had been listening in to the Sydney Game fishing discussions as they were out for a points day. Not much was being reported so our hopes were not high but we were still out there trolling a spread and by definition in with a chance:D

The bait grounds did'nt even hold bait so plan b was to motor to BB Wide and try a FAD. We tried the fad on the troll and then with some pillies with both method bearing the same result - zip.

Last chance was a bottom bash at 9 mile reef and Bash had a half hearted jig and once again the result was ziperoo (notice a theme? :D )

The consolation came in the news on the radio that only one Marlin had been tagged for the day.

A great day out despite the result and it has certainly left me more knowledgeable about game fishing and even hungrier for my first blue water fish.

Thanks Bashir for a great day and great company.

Mark

Bugger, what a slow day, but that's game fishing.

There was quite a few marlin caught on the weekend off Sydney. I know one guy that got 5 stripes wide, and one of my customers got 3 and hooked a blue. One of the bream guys hooked and dropped 2 small blacks 7km out on Saturday while fishing livies for kings.

We fished the wrong area I reckon, there was some good bait balls around 65-70 fathoms according to the radio, but buggered if we could find it! Although when we pulled in the lures the long rigger had definately been swiped at brand new lure with scuff marks on the leader, lure head and heat shrink  Never even snapped the band on the outrigger so who knows. Oh well next time.

bad luck there guys.

I`m planning on heading wide sat in a mates boat, out of sydney. Plan is to fish dollies early then drop livies to kings, or if we can get our hands on big slimies - bills. I missed the run of small blacks last year so hoping for at least a few this season.

Have I got news for you!:D

Dan, I had no problems picking up Slimies in the Harbour last week on both occassions I was out there. Found them not far south east of Dobroyd Head. You won't find too main in a big school, but you will see on your sounder various little dots around the screen from a couple of meteres to about 8 meters depth. The water there is between 10-15 metres. Just use a 10-15 gram slice and count it down about 7-10 seconds before starting your retrieve!

Vary the retrieve between dead slow and flat out, as each time I tried they would take a different speed. Got quiet few as the slice dropped too, so stay in touch with your line!:)

thanks joe, ive got no problem getting them when there around, But this boat i`m heading out in doesn`t have a livie tanks. i`m hoping to land 2 big horse slimies out off longy and bridle them up on the spot. That way i don`t have to travel with them. BIG BAIT BIG FISH.

SUNDAYS THE DAY NOW

I can vouch for Joe's technique on the Slimies. I thought he was pissing into the wind until he started bringing horses into the boat hand over fist!!!

Speaking of bridling....How is it done, and what do you need to be able to do it? I know the basics...but have never really seen it done or attemted it!

size 12 rubber band and a $2 bait needle are needed

loop the band onto the gape of the hook and pull the band snug, put the band into the bait needle.

thread the bait needle in the membrane above the eye ball and pull the band through

twist the band a number of times

put the hook point through the hole between the band and the needle, then back through the last twist in the band.

of course this is so much more easier if you are in front of me lol.

for kings I dont bother, I just pin the hook through the top lip. Bridling is great for circles.

Thanks Bashir. I gotta admit...the last bit has me a bit confused...but then again, I'm only a truckie!  If it isn't needed for Kings then I won't worry about it too much right now!
