Hi Everyone
The protest on Pittwater is no longer needed thanks to all those that have written letters.
The fisheries are in the next 2 weeks re-mapping Pittwater and all of its caulerpa weed beds. The are using divers, cameras, gps and mapping systems to locate and record the areas.
I have been told that salt will be the choice of attack in many areas but the native weeds will also suffer. Depending on the weed that the caulerpa is mixed with will dictate the attack though.
Please if you fish in Pittwater and have pulled any of this weed out of the area please report it to fisheries.
The commercial pros will be further restricted in their practices if required. This is why its important to report any outbreaks you have found. They will dive the reported areas and ultimately stop commercial fishing in the areas.
The travelling pros will not be coming to Pittwater or the Hawkesbury River. This applies to those from any part of NSW. If any commercial activity is seen in Pittwater report it to the fisheries hotline with their LFB number and location.
Some haulers are allowed but let fisheries sort it out.
Thanks once again to everyone and I am wondering whether I should cook the snags anyway and have a celebration instead of a protest.
What do You think?
All the best

Pete,

From the reports on FR, I think the protest should go ahead as planned - if these blokes are hauling Pittwater and then the mouth of Cowan, it is only a matter of time before the weed spreads right up through the Cowan system. I'm surprised that NPWS aren't more proactive in protecting their waterway.

I'm with Bluecod. We've gotta let people see we will protest against dodgy behaviour by Fisheries and by people who want to rob us of our right to fish by declaring sanctuaries etc. It's real good that there is some affirmative action being taken though, but what's with the recent plundering?

Peter, how did you get this information, did fisheries write to you or has the State Government gazetted new rules and regulations.

I will believe it when it’s made law. Fisheries and the Labour Government do not have a track record of coming good with their promises.

The protest I believe should go foreword and we should not let up until every nail is driven into their coffin. Remember there must be a State Election by March 2007, so let’s not pull back the blow torch, but instead turn up the heat and drive our point of view home.

I can't stand it, the damage and destruction being done to Pittwater. There have been reports of small fish floating dead on the surface of Pittwater and Cowan and ribbon weed floating on the surface. Recently a friend told me he saw small flounder floating dead in Pittwater along with ribbon weed. Guess who was at the boat ramp?

Now we even see the pros at Bayview boat ramp loading up their catch.

Peter, thank you for all your efforts and commitment to this cause, but please do not fall into a false sense of security. Let’s go forward with the protest.

Once again thanks Pete for being a driving force behind the move in getting pro’s out of Pittwater.

Cheers
Martin

First of all well done Pete for bringing to our attention the state that Pittwater is currently in. Without you i don't think Fisheries or the Govt would have done a thing.

Secondly i agree with the other guys in that we should go ahead with the protest. It sends a message to the Govt that we will not be stood over.

Pittwater should be made into a Rec fish only waterway as they have done in Botany Bay. Even if they ban the pros until the weed has been killed off, what happens then. They will be back and doing the same as what they have been doing all along, raping and pillaging and we will be back to square one. We need to keep the pressure up on the Govt until the next election. my thoughts anyway.

Cheers

Just had a response from my email to Alex McTaggart (local memeber for Pittwater): I will respond if we're going ahead with this. Are there particular points that need to be made in the response? I can give the basic outline, but I don't want to hijack Pete's noble cause....:D
email below:

I acknowledge receipt of your email of 31 January regarding the proposed protest for March 12 by recreational fisherman.

I write to ask if you can provide me with more details about the issue and the protest.

What are the key issues - if you could provide them in point form.

What is actually happening on the day and where.

I await your response.

Personally I reckon the protest should go ahead. We can make a point of telling them how the pro's have come into Pittwater and raped it in-discriminately. And that it will happen again!

Good going Neil - I emailed the Labour Member for Lake Macquarie well before Xmas on the Marine Park issue up there and the bludger hasn't even had the courtesy to acknowledge receipt. Hope he always stays a Back Bencher

Your response from McTaggart at least showed some interest from him.

Hey All,
Will the protest still be going ahead? I sent a letter to the Pittwater MP, and I've had a reply - see earlier in this thread, so I should really get back to him if it is - I would suggest that yes we should, as the pros are still stripping it bare.
Pete, is there anything that I should say in my email to McTaggart?
Cheers
Neil
