Hello Sydney Anglers.

Sorry for the delay between reports but we have been rather busy looking for another vessel for our charter business. Last week it was finally found after a 14-month search.

Our new vessel is a 7.9m alloy Fisher that has been operating in QLD under a 2C survey. In 10 weeks our vessel will have hopefully passed the NSW survey requirements and we will then be able to cater for all aspects of saltwater fishing. We will still be conducting our estuary charters but we will also offer dolphin fish charters as well as reef fishing, game fishing, jigging as well as our downrigging charters.

The new vessel will be capable of carrying 8 people including crew and is one stable boat.

Now for the fishing in Pittwater.

I am sorry to say that there are fish around at the moment and all are eating happily on most days. The problem is that they are not the fish I prefer to catch.

On most days when the weather has allowed us to fish, we have caught flathead, bream, trevally, leatherjackets as well as the odd cold kingfish.

Salmon on occasion have been seen scoffing bait between Lion Island and Box Head. These finicky feeder have been feeding deep most of the time and will eat small trolled yellowtail on the downrigger.

The leatherjackets are around most reefs and the area that seems to be holding most is Botham’s reef. A burly trail will see you attract these annoying critters and see with a few to feed the family.

The trevally are along the length of Pittwater on most days. Areas such as Soldiers Point and Longnose Point will see trevally caught providing you use burly to attract the fish and hold them in the area.

The best baits have been small squid strips, peeled prawns or whitebait floated down the burly trail. The trevally have been up to 42cm and are worth targeting on the lighter tackle.

The flathead that we have caught recently have all been small. The larger flathead seem to be between Lion Island and Box Head in the same areas as the schools of salmon.

To snare a larger flathead larger baits have been needed. Using mullet, yellowtail or slimy mackerel will see you go home with a 50cm model if you are prepared to put in the time.

The squid are around the West Head and Barrenjoey Headland area. The size of the jig has not been important as most of the squid have hood lengths of 25cm plus.

The kingies are still in Pittwater with most days at least seeing these fish. Over the last month the kingies have been caught whilst fishing around the tailor schools. The kingies are patrolling the outer edges of the action and are taking small soft plastics or hard-bodied lures if you can keep them from the tailor.

Another way to catch one is to cast an unweighted fresh squid head to the edge of the tailor school and hope that a kingie finds the bait before the tailor do.

The bream are a little hard to find inside Pittwater at the moment but they are being caught at West Head and along the washes of Broken Bay. Locals in the know are catching some big blue-nosed bream and they are using fresh tuna fillets and cubes.

I hope this report gets you keen enough to get your own boat out to catch some fish or sees you getting on board our boat so I can show you all the best spots to fish in Pittwater.

Why not come out for a day on Pittwater or The Hawkesbury River. The worst-case scenario is that you will learn new spots and techniques that you can use for the rest of your life.
