View Full Version : 5 Dollar Bait Jig

The weekend of the social day Joe & I pulled into the tackle store to pick up a few bits & pieces. When Joe asked for bait jigs the bloke handed over a packet of jigs with a price tag of 5 bucks.

Now before I go any further, Joe is one of the most generous people I know. He always offers to pay (we fight about who pays!) and if you ever needed anything, the big fella would probably give it to you.

When buying things however Joe is a man who likes to get good deal (I think it's a lebo thing!) and upon being quoted a fiver for a bait jig the big fella bunged on his highly animated "WHAT . . . HOW MUCH????" routine. The tackle shop bloke responded with a claim that the $5 bait jigs will catch Yakkas without bait where the $2 jigs won't. Of course we both rated this claim as highly dubious to the point of being complete bullshit. I think our mate in the tackle store percieved this and threw in a $2 jig for good measure.

Anyway we got to Balmoral and Joe had the $5 jig and me the $2 (no way was I taking responsibility for the good jig . . . what if I got snagged!!!). We commented about how full of crap the bloke at the shop was and started to catch bait.

Well I'll be absolutely stuffed but the $5 unbaited jig caught Yakkas at 2:1 to the $2 jig BAITED! The bloke was dead set 100% right!!!!

So Joe, can you remember the brand of jig because I reckon they are worth every cent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't mean to be cheeky Iain but did you and Joe try swapping jigs halfway through to see if the jig performance was in any way related to the operator?

geez you cope a bit Iain. Ever thought of going to one of those fishing dams so you can get the monkey of your back.

BTW i don't rate bait jigs that much. trying to untangle the jigs gets on my nerves. the old handline with a tiny long shanked hook with a piece of squid or plichard does me fine.

It was impressive. With regards to the operator, Telco, we were both doing the exact same thing. I didn't believe that a bait jig would make a difference....but it did.

The brand was something like Hyabusa or some such. Japanese made, and called a Sabiki jig. Dazza may know the brands.

Too right Blacky!!

Then again when you dish it out you have to expect some back :D :D :D :D

My time will come!!!

Hyabusa make lots of different jigs. Any description of the one that did the job?

I'll agree there guys, the good quality jigs get more slimies offshore for me. The best ones are the ones with the tiny squid skrits on them, slimies and little frigates go ape over them. I normally buy the Mustad, Hyabusa, Sabiki, black magic or jarvis walker bait jigs.

In the past I have bought the Mustad and the Jarvis Walker. The one I had shits on 'em.

It shat on them today too!

I had more than 18 livies in the tank in the space of half an hour or so. Frank, on the other hand, had only 8 and he had a helper as well as berley. I relied purely on the residual from his berley!

Mind you all the livies were released, alive, at the end of the day!

Too be honest Dave, it looks like all the other jigs I have used. If I had to pick a difference it would be a limper "feather" material.

Lots of questions about a magical jig :D

What size is it Joe and how many hooks attached ? Seriously!

Geez thats unbelievable ! I thought bait jigs were pretty much all the same. A bit of plastic, a bead and a hook. What makes the five dollar so special.

I use the same one all the time at West Head and get very differing results. The must be something in them. Love to see a photo.

Photo would be a bit hard, as it has lost a couple of hooks and looks a bit raggedy now. But after serving me well, and catching over 40 livies so far, I think it's great!:D

Those Sabiki jigs are good but I can generally only find them is sizes way too big for a yakka - a problem I find with them though is that the hooks are very brittle and tend to snap if you get hit by an XOS slimey or little bonito.

We`ve got them up to $9.95. It a fact that better quality jigs catch more fish....funny story

What was the name of the tackle store Joe & I'll give them a call? Using these jigs will save everyone alot of time and make catching bait much easier.

A good example is Ben's post from last night. He had Yakkas at the boat but they weren't taking bait. I'd be prepared to bet that with one of these he's have filled the tank in minutes.

One Stop bait and tackle I think it was. Burwood Rd. Concord. Didn't you take a tide chart from there?

Hmmm... i never seem to have sucess with Bait Jigs.
Several times i have used them on Yakkas that were smashing nearly anything that came near the surface but they would'nt touch the Jig - the only time they have worked was on Jocool's boat....

Persist Gabzi - many a time outside we've pulled up a full load of slimies on them and often bonito and yakkas in with the slimes. When we've put them on the bottom we've come up with flatties and even a plate sized pearl perch.

So the same jig would be $1 anywhere else...?

I just checked my bait jig box and have them with price tags up to $16. I tend to steer away from the cheapies mainly because the hooks snap and they fall apart, not because I've noticed them to catch less fish.

Andrew,

Do you still carry the Mustad bait rigs with the tiny squids on them?

I need some bait rigs cause as you pointed out my hooks have all broken on one outing. You have plenty at work?

I'll check tomorrow mate. The last few weeks have been the busiest time of the year for selling bait jigs due to the Interclub, so I may have run out.

I like the Mustad ones ( don't know if they make them any more ) as they were perfect for horse slimy's and bonnies.

Silstar do jigs with SP squid on them, but they're a bit big for bait collection.
Black Pete do some with little squid, they're fairly similar to the Mustad ones.

No they weren't the huge Silstar ones. I may be wrong, but I think they were Black Magic.

I will have a look on Sunday when I come down for a visit. Need to stock up as Port is coming up very quickly. Have you spoken to Byron about Port yet?

Not sure what I was supposed to be talking to him about...
He's on cloud 9 at the moment, he finished 4th at the Hawkesbury ABT and qualified for the grand final. :D

I didn't fish it Joe, I needed a break from bream.
I've only spoken to Byron and seen the results on Ausbream, it looks like it was a bit tough.

A decent slimy can tie a bait jig into unrecoverable knots I find as they tend to circle!

To get over the tangles fish your jigs on heavy gear. I fish mine on and old 15kg stroker rod with an overhead filled with 30lb braid and a big snapper lead, works well, the snapper lead is the trick.

Bash' is right. Usinag a heavy snapper lead on the bottom is the best way to stop the jig from tangling.

When I chase pillies at Port Hacking I cut the jigs in half as each cast (I cast the jig and rip it back) results in a pillie on each hook. The 3 hook jig lasts a lot longer than a 6 hook one will down there.

Thats exactly the way I do it. Don't get to many tangles except when you hook up onto 4 small bonnies at once:mad:  :D

Thanks Andrew I will see them on the weekend.

Another tip, most bait jigs have 5 or so hooks & the trouble usually comes with multiple catches on the jig. Cut the jig in half & re-rig. You then have 2 or 3 hooks on the rig. Less opportunity for many fish to tangle it up & if one rig does get stuffed, you've got another handy to drop down straight away.

Cheers, Darryl
