After salivating for a long time over the tiny Avet reel, which I still haven't bought, I have been looking at others. What I have found is a couple of TLD 5 reels on EBay. They look so good.:p

I want one!

I realise that it is nowhere near as good as the Avet, but I just reckon it looks awesome. As I already have a couple of TLD's I was thinking of starting a collection.

Does any Sydney Angler out there have a TLD 5, 10 or 15 that they are willing to part with? I would be more interested in non-working models at this stage to keep the cost down, but would consider a working model if the price was right!

Has anyone used the TLD 5? What is your impression of it? Is it as small as I think it is?????

For that matter, has anyone seen or used a Charter Special 1000? I have the 2000, and I think it's great. The 1000 isn't listed here in Australia, yet is listed in the States.

Wouldn't mind getting my hands on a 100 as well!:D

the charter special 1000 used to be available here so you should be able to track one down. The tld5 and 10 are good little reels for 4kg, they are perfect for trolling for the smaler pelagics. They command top dollar though, working or not!

Looks like EBay may have one for about $70US. See how I go I guess!:o

Funny thing is, I can't find a Daiwa on EBay. I have a couple of bids going on a TLD 5 and a TR100LD, but no Daiwa!:(

ld30h never knew they existed! I rate the ld50h over the tld 15, so I reckon the 30h would be a sweet reel. Is there a 10 or 20h too???

As far as I can accertain there is an LD30 and an LD50! Dan has a LD50 and said they are a sweet reel about the size of a Tld 15. The LD30 is about the size of a TLD5, but offers Mag and Cast control.

In negotiations with a guy in Singapore for his LD30!:D :D

New additions...
TLD 10
Charter Special 1000 Waiting for delivery on these 2 reels.
Still looking for....
LD30H (may have one...not sure yet)
Avet SX 51

Incidently, I have been touch with Black Magic to see what they can tell me is different on their SX 51. All they tell me is that it is a beefier reel. So I went direct to Avet for an explanation.:D They say that it exactly the same as the standard Avet. Nothing beefy about it! So I think I will be looking for a standard Avet!

After recieving my reel, I promptly stripped it,a nd checked all its innards. Opened up the sealed bearings, and got rid of all the thick grease and lubed them up and replaced them. Checked the drag washer. It's still the standard, so I have ordered some HT-100 drags of Dan for this, and some other reels. Put it back together, and it feels great. Drag is smooth, and everything works correctly.

Interestengly, the TLD 10 has a slightly longer handle than my Charter Special. Seeing that the rod that the Charter Special lives on has been temporarily de-comissioned, I removed the handle of it, and placed it on the '10. Looks heaps tough with the big cranking handle on it.:p :p

I'm not sure why, but I bought another '10.:o I just recieved it in todays mail.

Got to agree Joe - the bigger handle makes that itty bitty reel much more comfortable in the hand :)

DAMN....I think I have a problem....

Just loaded up the TLD 10 with Tuna Terror braid, and fitted it to a small, but stout ABU Morrum rod. Don't know if it will have the balls to pull anything up on a good run, but it will be fun trying.:D

Joe,

Did you refit the washers (()) instead of ()() :D

JOCOOL
05-05-2006, 12:26 AM
Actually...the 10 only has 2 washers fitted thus...() But what I did do, was put washers from a 30 II speed. Thicker washers, and more drag. Ramps up a lot quicker too.:D Not that I need more drag on a 6 KG reel.:o

It'll be interesting to see the results, a 9kg mack tuna would be a fun way to test it out:)

Point taken George. I'll go out to the garage later and take a pic of both the 1000 and the 2000 side by side to give you an indication.:D

JOCOOL
08-05-2006, 10:21 PM
The 1000 is narrower than the 2000. I just cracked it open to have a look-see, and it has the same drag as the 2000, so the greased washer I had went straight in.:p New bellevilles were added, but I will do the rest later.

There is a shot showing it on top of my TLD 25 for comparison as well as with the TLD 10 and the CS 2000.

Not a bad looking piece of gear Joe - all you got to do now is find some fish for it to work out on :p

Keep doing the right things and that back should heal up reasonably quickly, you being so young and fit  so you can get back out amongst them [no pun intended] :D

I just finished one of the '10's tonight. I was waiting on some drag washers to arrive...and they have.:D

I trimmed the washers to suit the reel, greased it all up and slapped it together. I had previously done the () thing and cleaned out the bearings.

This reel has the 20lb braid on it. Last week I cranked it up to about 8lb of drag on the Kings and still got smoked. I just tweaked it now, and I have dialled it in at 14lb drag at strike, and I still have excellent freespool.:D :D

Lets hope I can test it properly tomorrow.
